UK’s most Influential Brands
Today, the UK’s leading market research company, Ipos Mori, has released a list of the top 100 most influential brands. The list, topped by Google and Amazon, is mainly comprised of online and technology based firms, which were voted for on a number of different factors, including: trust, engagement, corporate citizenship and brand presence.
“The results showed although brand presence, largely driven by advertising, is strong, it is not enough to ensure a place in the top 10 most influential brands in consumers’ minds”.

Self Shots get you closer…

The Cape Times (South Africa) has “turned famous photographs into self shots” as part of a great campaign. The concept features around the tagline, “you can’t get any closer to the news”. After a clever bit of Photo-shopping, these iconic photographs look so realistic, adding to the success of the campaign.

Gillette goes Minimal.

Four design students have created a timeless new look for the global shaving brand Gillette.

The simple design, printed onto 200gsm board, “gives the packaging a stylish and lightweight feel with eco-friendly materials, without removing quality from the product. Gillette’s story is worth being told and the design will reflect the quality that lies behind the technologically advanced products of the brand. The product is the main focus on the packaging, where no graphic or colours interfere”.

If only this actually went into production…

Land Rover – Roam Free

The great British car manufacturer has released a new advert this week, selling the new Land Rover. However, unlike most of car commercials, this one features no car at all. Instead, a group of free-runners tackle the rough terrain that the Land Rover would normally be seen in.

I believe this to be very clever and effective means of advertising not just a product, but also the brand.

The spider holster system works by screwing a ball joint at the bottom of your camera that then clips into a holster attached to your waist/belt. It comes in two versions; the “black widow”, a small lightweight belt clip and the “spider pro”, a larger waist strap system designed to carry heavier weighted cameras. I’ve found both systems work well with almost any camera, from the pro heavy duty SLR with monster lenses to your small compact camera that just takes up too much space in your pocket.

A loaf to ‘End’ all loafs…
As part of an April Fools Facebook campaign, earlier this year Britain’s favourite bakery Warburtons released an image of an ‘All Ends’ loaf, a supposedly limited edition loaf comprising of only ‘crust ends’.
Within hours of the image being uploaded, hundreds of people liked the post, setting it to become a viral trend. Earlier this month Warburtons then announced it would actually be releasing the loaf due to the interest and excitement it had generated.

Copycat KittyKat

One topic that has been in the news this week is that of supermarket own-brands replicating the packaging of well established brands in a number of different markets. The few examples above are amongst some of the worst cases.

“Consumer group Which? has published a list of 150 supermarket own-brand products which it says are sowing confusion amongst shoppers by aping the design, fonts and colour schemes of established brands packaging”.

But one questions remains. Is this marketing tactic a form of plagiarism or just an innocent attempt to gain attention to a particular product?
